2011 SfAA Podcasts are available

The SfAA Podcasts, a project I started with the support of UNT anthropology, continued this past March for the fifth year at the Annual Meeting of the SfAA in Seattle, WA.

We’re started to publish the 19 sessions that we recorded (links below).  I think that there are a few that will be of particular interest to business anthropologists and I’ve added a star to them below.  My panel, Ethics in Online Research, was recorded.  We focused on what it takes to make online ethnography and research practical in a business-context and how to balance ethics and client needs.

Tentative schedule of 2008 SfAA Podcasts

I’ve posted the tentative schedule of the 2008 SfAA Podcasts. I say it’s tentative because timely publication of the blog posts and audio is dependent on the speakers to an extent- I need them to submit their bio info for the post as well as electronic versions of the papers and PowerPoints (this is optional, but I encourage it). It’s also tentative because I may publish podcasts early if I have extra time to work on the editing. I chose the order based on the ease of coordinating with speakers and the amount of editing involved with the audio files.

Here is the (very) tentative schedule of podcasts for the 68th Annual Meeting of the Society of Applied Anthropology (SfAA).

SfAA Podcasts in Memphis, TN

I’ll be headed to Memphis on Tuesday, March 25th for the Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA). While there the SfAA Podcast team will be recording seventeen sessions (tba soon) and the Friday night awards for another round of the SfAA Podcasts!

If you’re a fan of the SfAA Podcasts (and why wouldn’t you be?) and want to show your support head over to the website and download one of our nifty badges (directions are there on how to do it).

If you’re headed to Memphis for the conference then make sure to stop by our info table near registration on Wednesday to pick up some of our cool swag. Sticker Giant is sponsoring the project so we’ll have some awesome stickers and other goodies for you.

The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) Podcast team announces six openings for team members to participate in an ongoing podcasting project at the 2008 SfAA Annual Meeting, March 24 – 29, 2008, in Memphis, TN. The primary responsibility will be to audio record sessions and publicize the SfAA podcasts at the SfAA Annual Meeting. Interested individuals will be asked to dedicate 15 hours to the project between February 15 and April 30, 2008. All team member positions have identical duties and are open to any student, undergraduate or graduate, who will be attending the 2008 Annual Meeting of the SfAA in Memphis, TN March 24 – 29, 2008. Previous experience in audio recording or podcasting is not necessary as there will be training involved.

The SfAA Podcasts project began at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the SfAA in Tampa, Florida, managed by Jen Cardew. This year the project will be co-managed by Jen Cardew and Diana Harrelson. The goal of the 2008 SfAA Podcast team is to record 15 selected sessions, to be published to the web as free podcasts, making the meeting accessible to students who cannot travel as well as to members of other disciplines. 2007 AAA Day 2 & SfAA Podcasts

I spent about 6 hours at the main conference hotel yesterday and while I did not attend any sessions, I had a great time! The vibe of this year’s AAA is drastically different from last year’s and I’m contributing this to two things; there is a central location for people to hang out in (last year the convention center was not conducive to hanging out) and I know significantly more people. I’ve met a ton of people in the last year because of the podcast project and knowing people makes conferences more fun (half the fun is running into friends, etc.!).

Yesterday I met up with John Curran . I’ve emailed with John before, but had not met him f2f yet. He’s a great guy!

I also met the program chairs for both the 2008 and 2009 SfAA Meetings. Both chairs are supportive of the SfAA podcasts and I’m looking forward to working with them!

I also went to dinner with five people to discuss the podcast project. It was a very productive meeting and we discussed funding, documentation, consent forms, etc. Going forward the podcasts will be hosted much longer than four months and there will be an option for professors to use them in their courses! The podcasts will also remain free to the listeners ;)

I’m off to yet another meeting in a bit…

This conference habit is getting expensive!!

I’m not going to get into the fact that conferences are expensive, nor will spend anytime on the irrelevance of conferences, the rise of “unconferences,” or any other critique of them. I have my opinions of conferences, and for the most part it seems a bit contradictory that I’ll be attending so many… but I’m a student, I get discounts (I’ll take advantage while I can ;)

Today, Tim and I registered for the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) in Miami, Florida. Part of our discussion to go was simply because it’s so close to home for us (home is Tampa, FL) and the affordable cost of the trip (early registration is only $150 for non-students, $50 for students). But, I’m looking forward to FOWA because it’s not anthropology – it’ll help me to expand my horizons a bit. Plus, it’s neat that Tim (total geek) and me (totally awesome) can go to the same events and enjoy them (we went to BarCamp Orlando and had a lot of fun). BarCamp Miami is during FOWA, so we’ll be there too :)

Two weeks after FOWA, Tim and I will be headed to Austin, TX for SXSW. We’ll be there for the Interactive part, so again, it’s cool we can go together (we’ll get totally different things from the sessions) and I’ll be expanding my horizons. Really excited about SXSW.

Two weeks after SXSW, I’ll be in Memphis, TN for the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) Meeting. I always have a good time at the SfAA Meetings, and I’ll be doing the SfAA Podcasts again in Memphis (much news about that project – I’ll post about it soon!).

Late February – early April is going to be super busy! EPIC is in Denmark next year… I hope to be there – but who knows! I’m currently taking a break from working on our paper for the American Anthropological Assoc. conference (AAA) this year in DC – that takes place at the end of November.

I’m really not looking forward to being busy or being away from home that much – BUT, like I said, I’ll take advantage of the student discounts and University funding while it lasts :)
