Reception in honor of Paul Farmer at SfAA

27 Mar

I went to the conference hotel where the SfAA meeting is underway. The sessions do not start until tomorrow, but you can register today. I registered and got my program. The program is pretty nice this year, it has the meeting logo on the white cover and it’s perfect bound. There are two additional loose sheets in the cover (which I helped some USF folks put in there :)

The first is the typical “additions” and “cancellations” sheet. I’m second on the sheet under “additions”- right under neath the book signing. That’s right.. I’ll be presenting on Saturday at 1:30 (S-103) about my undergraduate smoking research. In keeping with my interest in open-access I will be posting the presentation paper and the podcast of my speech here sometime next week.

The second sheet is for more exciting. There will be a reception in honor of Paul Farmer on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. I’m told there will be excellent free food provided as well- which should get you there if Farmer isn’t enough ;)

I’ll be buzzing around the conference for the rest of the week, if you see me (pic below) say hi!! Photo 9.jpg

Transcription

7 Nov

I transcribed my second required interview last night. I used the demo version of Express Scribe, which is available for free. I don’t have any experience using transcription software, but I did like this product. There is a feature where it plays about 10 seconds of audio, pauses for 5 seconds and then replays 5 seconds of the last segment and 5 seconds of new audio. Once I found a rhythm with it, it made the whole process much easier than my first time around.

Voice Recorder Update

5 Nov

I did my second required interview on Friday night. I used my old recorder and my new recorder. My interviewee thought I was a bit odd for using two recorders, but I explained my reason and they were very understanding (luckily).
I used both so that if the recording from the new one didn’t have good sound quality once I uploaded it, I would have the old one to fall back on.

I’m thrilled to be able to say that the quality of the new recorder was EXCELLENT when I uploaded it. So, I will not be able to listen to it unless I upload the file- but I don’t see why I would do that anyway.

Digital Voice Recorders

2 Nov

As an undergrad I used my handy dandy Olympus VN-240 voice recorder. I love this little recorder, the sound quality is excellent, it has three folders for storage and it is very easy to use. Its one fault is that it does not have PC connectivity.

So, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I had heard from others in the UNT program that Sony recorders came with easy to use software and overall are good recorders. So, I set out to find a new device. I settled on the Sony IC recorder because of all the bells and whistles that it came with (and the price was right). It has five folders for storage (and an mp3 folder), 11 hour battery life and 115 hours of recording (at the highest quality). Most importantly, it has PC connectivity.

I have to do two interviews this week for a project, so I have been anxiously awaiting my fancy new recorder. I finally got it on Tuesday. I am very satisfied with the built-in microphone; the volume of the recordings is HORRIBLE!
So, I will have to purchase an intrusive external mic to use until I can justify buying yet another digital voice recorder.
