Help select the 2011 SfAA Podcast sessions due by 1/18

15 Jan

It’s that time again! We’re currently working to select the 17 sessions that will be recorded by the SfAA Podcast Team at the 2011 Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA. Just like the last four years, these sessions will start to appear on this site in April as free audio recordings.

As co-manager, Yumiko, has already started to innovate the project. This year we’re using a survey tool to collect the many suggestions we get. We’d love to have your suggestions so please fill out the survey by the end of the day on Tuesday Janaury 18.

We’re asking for your help so that we can ensure a wide range of topics and interests are covered. We would like to request your input on what sessions we should record. Suggested selection criteria include:

  • Topic is “hot”
  • Topic is of widespread interest to many people
  • Well known speakers
  • Student speakers
  • A wide range of all disciplines and the four sub-disciplines are included
Please let us know your session suggestions by filling out our survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5RV8576!
We’ve created this survey off of this version of the program.

If you have comments or suggestions about the survey or the experience please email the team at sfaapodcasts(at)gmail(dot)com

Selecting the 2009 round of SfAA Podcasts

5 Jan

Happy New Year!

Planning for the 2009 round of SfAA Podcasts is now underway. We’re asking for your help in selecting the 20 sessions that will be recorded so that we can ensure a wide range of topics and interests are covered.

Suggested selection criteria include:

  • Topic is “hot”
  • Topic is of widespread interest to many people
  • Famous speakers

The preliminary program can be found here. In listing sessions, it would be helpful if you could copy and paste the session number and the session name, e.g. “W-01 Lessons and Questions from Applied Settings” directly from the program into an email or Word doc. We would like to request your suggestions by Friday, January 15. Please send them to Jen Cardew at jencardew@gmail.com or post them here in the comments field.

Every year people come up to me at the conference and ask why their session wasn’t recorded or how we select sessions so now is your chance to speak up ;)

Podcasts of the “Working with Govt. Agencies” sessions from the SfAA are available.

26 Apr

There was a two part series at the SfAA meeting entitled “Working with Governmental Agencies.” The sessions did not get as much attention as I expected them too. After all, Montgomery McFate is one of the most talked about anthropologists in the world these days and she was on the first part of the panel.

The SfAA Podcast team received permission to record four speakers from this two part panel. McFate’s paper is not included. The others are interesting though. You can find them here.

2008 SfAA Podcasts- Preparing Applied Anthropologists for the 21st Century Parts I and II are up

21 Apr

The second and third podcasts from the 2008 SfAA Podcasts are now available at SfAApodcasts.net

The session chairs Phil Young and Carla Guerrón-Montero have put together a nice summary of the main points for this two part COPAA sponsored session.  All of the speakers in this session have a NAPA Bulletin in-press that will be a more throughout account of the SfAA papers.

2008 SfAA Podcasts have begun

15 Apr

The first of seventeen 2008 SfAA Podcasts is up over at SfAApodcasts.net.

Presidential Plenary Session in Honor of John van Willigen: The Art and Science of Applied Anthropology in the 21st Century” including Satish Kedia, Susan Andreatta, Metta Baba, and Erve Chambers is the first one up. I’ve only listened to portions of it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

One of the best things about having a podcast team this year was that I’m looking forward to the podcasts being published as much as everyone else. Last year I recorded each session so I heard all of them but this year I only recorded five ;)

Deadline for SfAA Podcast team member applications extended to February 1, 2008

28 Jan

(x-posted at SfAA Podcasts)

That’s right, we’ve extended the deadline until Friday. We’re looking for a few more people to join our team and we’ve expanded our search to include recent graduates (graduated from grad or undergrad in 2007).

Here’s the original post about the team member application:

The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) Podcast team announces six openings for team members to participate in an ongoing podcasting project at the 2008 SfAA Annual Meeting, March 24 – 29, 2008, in Memphis, TN. The primary responsibility will be to audio record sessions and publicize the SfAA podcasts at the SfAA Annual Meeting. Interested individuals will be asked to dedicate 15 hours to the project between February 15 and April 30, 2008. All team member positions have identical duties and are open to any student, undergraduate or graduate, who will be attending the 2008 Annual Meeting of the SfAA in Memphis, TN March 24 – 29, 2008. Previous experience in audio recording or podcasting is not necessary as there will be training involved.

The SfAA Podcasts project began at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the SfAA in Tampa, Florida, managed by Jen Cardew. This year the project will be co-managed by Jen Cardew and Diana Harrelson. The goal of the 2008 SfAA Podcast team is to record 15 selected sessions, to be published to the web as free podcasts, making the meeting accessible to students who cannot travel as well as to members of other disciplines. Please visit this page for more information.

The deadline for applications is January 28, 2008 February 1, 2008. The application process is described in this PDF document:Team Member Application

Please help us spread the word about the available team member positions and link back to this page!

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!!
